The city is a key location for transportation and communication in Venezuela. It is also an important base for exploring oil. It is rich in natural resources. In theory, it should have been a wealthy city. Sadly, due to the corrupt law enforcement, drug cartels and ineffective government, the city has seen tremendous violence over the years. Some of them have even gone unreported because they are already deemed normal by many.
